Weekly Updates 9/22-9/26

PTO:
PTO meeting is TODAY at 3:15pm. I encourage you to attend if you are able. We will be voting on changing our name from PTA to PTO. By changing the name we will no longer have to pay PTA dues and that means more money for our students. I will be keeping the children who attend in Mrs. Chancellor's room during the meeting.

Picture Day:
Picture day is tomorrow! Our time is at 12:30pm. Please send in the completed form that I sent home with your child last week and money tomorrow if you wish to purchase school pictures.

Reading:
Please be sure that your child is reading out loud nightly. The 25 books they are to read at home are a major reading grade.

Culture Banner:
On Friday, your child brought home instructions to make a "Culture Banner". Please help your child do this project, but make sure they are the one doing the bulk of the work themselves. The banner is due this Friday, Sept. 26th.

Midweek News

Box Tops:
Please send in your Box Tops ASAP. I will be sending these to be counted on Monday, September 22nd. Your child can bring them in at any time. I have a bag right inside my door where they can put them when they arrive in class.

Also, don't forget we are also collecting Campbell's Labels for Education. I have a bag for that as well.

Fundraiser Info:
Your child brought home 2 fundraising packets yesterday. These are 2 different companies and the orders (and money for the orders) must be kept separate. So, if a family member wants to order something from both companies, they need to write 2 checks or place the exact amount of cash in EACH envelope.
All orders and money are due OCTOBER 1st...sell, sell, sell!

PTO:
We heard an update yesterday and we have 210 families who have joined, so we still need 140 more before your child can wear jeans on Fridays! The first 3 classes to have 100% participation get a snow cone party. Please send in your $10 and teal form as soon as you are able.

READING GRADE:
Just a reminder, the 100 Club Book Log counts as a grade for your child each of the 9 weeks. If your child reads 25 out of the 25 books, they will receive a 100. If they only read 20, that is an 80, if they only read 15, that is a 60, etc. Please make your child's reading a priority!!!

Scootpad at home:
Your child is allowed to get on Scootpad at home and I would strongly encourage them to do so. Any work they do at home earns them extra coins and helps build a strong foundation for the skills we are working on in class.

Headphones:
I still have a few students who have not brought in their headphones. Please send those in THIS WEEK! We use them daily during computer work. I will be giving them a gallon bag to keep them in during the day in hopes that it will help them last through the year :)

Homework:
Please make sure that you are working with your child and checking their homework nightly. It will always be due on Friday unless there is no school that day.
Remember, your child should be reading out loud for 20 minutes every night in addition to their Math and Word Work.

Spelling City:
We started last week using Spelling and Vocabulary City for tests and we will begin using it for Word Work in class this week. If your child would like to log on and play the games at home their password and username is the same as their Scootpad username and password. Also, I will be entering your emails to the site to keep you updated on your child's progress. Most students did exceptionally well on their Spelling test last week. If your child needs to work on Spelling I will send their tests home for them to study. Please see the Spelling Word and Vocabulary word sections on this blog for the weekly words.

100 Club Reading Log
We are now a month away from the deadline for the first 25 books and many students do not have any books written in their logs. Your child is to be reading out loud NIGHTLY for 20 minutes for homework. Please make sure that you are writing the books in the log AFTER they have read out loud to you and please initial beside the book. Also, please do not forget that 9 of these books are to be non-fiction (fact) books. Many students have fiction books written on the lines designated for non-fiction books. Chapter books can count as 2 books.

Headphones
Several students still have not brought in their headphones. Please make sure that you send those in this week. We will begin spelling and vocabulary test using those this week.

Homework
We will begin having Word Work homework this week. Your child will have their words and sorts in their folder Tuesday night and these are due on Friday(along with the math homework) . There are 4 tasks for math (as usual) and 4 for Word Work, so this week you will need to double up one night. It should not add that much time on to their original homework.

PTO Membership
We are only a third of the way to our school wide goal for PTO Membership. Only about 3 families from our class have joined so far. Please make sure you send in that $10 and join today! If we reach 350 families, your students will be allowed to wear jeans and an AZ Kelley t-shirt every Friday.
Our next PTO meeting is Monday, September 22nd at 3:15pm. I would love to see you there!

Head Phones
Your child will need a pair of headphones or earbuds that they can keep in their locker for computer use in the classroom. Please send these in as soon as possible.

Open House
2nd Grade Open House will be this Wednesday, August 20th at 6:00 pm. Please make plans to attend this special night. I will be presenting important information that you and your child will need to make this a successful school year. I look forward to meeting each of you and talking to you more in depth about this school year.

100 Club
I will be sending home a reading log for the 100 Club for your child. Your child will be required to read 25 books per grading period (every 9 weeks) and these books will need to be recorded by you and initialed. Reading at least 20 minutes a night out loud is extremely important for a child to become an expert reader. Please help your child accomplish this goal. Their first log  (25 books) is due October 3rd.

Computer Program Passwords
I have taped your child's passwords to the computer programs we use in their Parent/Teacher Communicator Folder. We have been practicing on these sites in class, but it will help your child greatly if they log on at home as well and practice. I will add apps and sites on the blog as I come across new useful programs.

Supply Fee
Please do not forget to send in your child's supply fee. A baggie and a green note explaining the fee were sent home last week. We will be ordering class t-shirts soon and that comes out of that money.

Class Dojo
Most of you signed the Dojo forms and sent them back to me, however, I only have about 6 parents who actually signed up for accounts. The codes for you and your child to log in are taped in their Parent/Teacher Communicator. The code beginning with S is the student code and the P code is for you, the parent. Please make this a priority. Your child's behavior reports for the week will be available through this website.
